Exploring the Southern Dalmatian Islands

Vis

Vis is a small island lying to the far South of the Dalmatian coast with a small fishing population of over 3000. The island has now become a top tourist attraction for those looking to explore the natural side of the Dalmatian coast. With many sea caves and excellent beaches, Vis has become a coveted summer destination. Best accessed by water, visitors can enjoy the wealth of the island’s rich history and taste it! The first Croatian vineyard was planted on this island and it still harvests excellent wines every year.

Hvar

This ancient island has played an integral part in the history of the Mediterranean over the centuries. The Hvar culture were a Neolithic group of the Mediterranean who lived on the islands as far back as 3500 BC. In 300 BC the Ancient Greeks founded the city of Phallos on the island and it flourished in trade, art, culture and tourism. Today the island is known for its relaxing Mediterranean atmosphere and beautiful beaches. Hvar has beautiful towns to explore with many ancient ruins, museums and the fantastic Stari Grad plains where you can cycle through the lavender fields and vineyards!

Brac

Brac is definitely a must-do if you are looking for something that’s off the beaten path. It is great for exploring the quieter side of Croatian island life and a must for outdoor activities. Brac is home to the tallest mountain peak in the Adriatic and has some great hiking routes. It is also home to Zlatni Rat, a beautiful beache that extends out into the ocean on a long narrow strip of white sand.

Solta

Solta is the best stop to try out the very best of Mediterranean food and drink. The island’s main industry (besides tourism) is its produce, fishing and wine. It definitely offers visitors value for money in experiencing authentic Croatian coastal cuisine and has a few beautiful beaches to relax on. The legend goes that the ruins on the island once belonged to the Delmati Queen named Teuta whose castle was believed to be a place where you could find inner peace. Be sure to sample the one of a kind Dobričić wine when visiting here.

Trogir

Trogir was founded by the Greeks, then taken over by the Romans and eventually the Venetians. Today the town’s rich architecture stands testament to its history with cathedrals, forts and baroque style buildings. Like most small towns you can also enjoy a rich variety of seafood and wine while taking in the beautiful surrounding views of the Adriatic archipelago.
