Where is the best place to visit whilst sailing in Southeast Asia?

There are many incredible countries and islands in Southeast Asia, so many, in fact, that it can be hard to find the right place when looking into where to visit in Southeast Asia.

Thailand is an incredible country, with stunning scenery steeped in vibrant culture and history. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore all offer their own cuisines, architecture, beaches and histories.

There are many incredible beaches and cities across Southeast Asia, so we have summarised our top picks for you to find your perfect fit depending on the Thailand sailing holiday you want to experience.

For Families

  • Phuket, Thailand – there is plenty to do, the beaches are beautiful and family friendly, whether you explore in the wet or dry season, Thailand has a lot to offer for families.
  • Hoi An, Vietnam – This city is beautiful, steeped in culture and heritage. There’s plenty to do here as well as many family-friendly beaches and activities nearby.
  • Siem Reap, Cambodia – For family bike days, historic architecture and trips to explore the floating homes and villages on the Tonle Sap (the world’s largest freshwater lake).
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – this Capital City is a lesser-known family favourite, with activities and experiences that are generally better for money than its neighbour, Singapore. For families visiting KL recommend seeing the sensational Batu Caves, or visit the popular Sunway Lagoon water park.
  • Sanur, Bali – this beachside area is quite spectacularly beautiful, it is also far more calm and quiet than a lot of other parts of Bali and more suitable for small children. It is also less than an hours drive from the buzzing Capital, Ubud, meaning you can do day trips to the centre and there are plenty of activities and experiences for your family within this overall region.

For Couples

  • Ko Lanta, Thailand – the perfect romantic beach spot. Quieter than many other locations in Thailand, Ko Lanta has it all: exquisite beaches, delectable dining opportunities and unique wildlife. Perfect for honeymooners or couples after a serene and romantic getaway.

For First-Time Sailors

  • Phuket across to Krabi is a fairly calm and truly beautiful route for Sailors wanting to explore Southeast Asia for the first time.
  • The Gulf Of Thailand – Koh Samui, Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park and Ko Pha Ngan are stunning islands just off the east coast of Thailand.

For Large Groups

  • Bangkok! This city never sleeps and you will never run out of things to do, explore roof bars with sensational aerial views of the city (we love Seen Skyline Bar at Hotel Avani), river boat tours, markets (Chatuchak weekend & Flower market, Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market), and many, many nightlife and clubbing options!
  • Bali – the south west of the Island is teeming with activity; nightlife, beach clubs and wellness retreats! This includes Beach Bars such as Finns Beach Club, Potato Head Beach Club and La Brisa; World-famous gyms such as Wanderlust Crossfit Gym, Jungle Box and the Body Factory. After more of a wellness experience and pampering? Visit one of Bali’s iconic flower baths (we love The Udaya, Magic Hills, FiveElements and Karsa Spa).

Phuket, Thailand – For large parties interested in nightlife and partying, we recommend PaTong Beach, and Karon Beach: as both have large beach spaces, readily available TukTuks  and a plethora of Beach Bars, Restaurants, Markets and adventure parks on your doorstep.

When is the best time to visit Southeast Asia?

The dry season in Southeast Asia is the best time to visit. For Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines this is between November-April. You’ll experience clear skies and gentle tides – ideal for a sailing holiday.

However, in Bali, Borneo and Indonesia these are the wet months, meaning the best time to visit is between April-October.

Malaysia and Singapore have year – round warmth and humidity, without much of a seasonal divide.
