The Ionian Sea is a favourite for sailors, thanks to its clear blue waters and beautiful islands. It’s a place full of beautiful sights, interesting history, and great stories. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a newcomer to yacht charters, the Ionian provides an unparalleled sailing experience.
Where Are the Ionian Islands?
You’ll find the Ionian islands in western Greece, starting at the end of the Adriatic Sea just off the coast of Albania. There are 160 miles of gorgeous island hopping to do from there, as the islands then stretch out in a south-southeast direction. Some of these islands sit closer to Italy than they do to the Greek capital, which makes for a great blend of cultures and flavours as you explore.
When Is the Best Time To Visit?
If you prefer cooler weather for hiking while you sail, aim for April or May. It’s warm enough to enjoy but not too hot, which is perfect for a day on the trails. This is a good time to stretch your legs on mountainous Lefkas and Corfu. Daily average temperatures are likely to be upwards of 14 degrees Celsius in April, rising through May.
It doesn’t take long for the region to warm up though; by June temperatures can exceed 40. This lasts throughout the summer, as there are less Meltemi Etesian winds that are felt in the Cyclades. For lazy beach days on Zante or Paxi, your best bet is June and early July before the crowds start building in August.
Autumn temperatures do bring some cool air again, but there is also the chance of semi-tropical rains coming from Medicane storm systems. That’s why early season sailing can be less risky than late season, but you might find some better deals on package pricing.
Southern Ionian: Serenity and Exploration
- Lefkas Town
Kick off your trip in Lefkas Town, the perfect start point for exploring the Ionian. It’s a lovely place with a walkable main street, cool shops, tasty food spots, and a busy town square. It’s a great place to acclimate to the Greek island vibe.
Tip: Arrive early in the morning to secure a good mooring spot and enjoy a leisurely breakfast at one of the local cafes before the town gets busy.
- Vlikho
For your first night, sail to Vlikho, a picturesque bay with small waterside villages. Enjoy a serene evening and explore the local area.
Tip: Try a traditional Greek taverna in Vlikho for an authentic meal. Fresh seafood is a local specialty and pairs wonderfully with local wines.
- Meganisi
For stunning sunset views, head to Meganisi. Trek or cycle up to Spartochori for breathtaking vistas as the sun dips below the horizon. Don’t miss Vathi for snorkelling over a sunken plane, and visit Abelike Bay for a rustic, secluded BBQ spot.
Tip: Bring your snorkelling gear to explore the underwater wreckage at Vathi. It’s a unique experience that adds an adventurous twist to your sailing journey.
- Kalamos
Kalamos Town invites you to trek to the ruins of an old monastery. The panoramic views of the Greek mainland are well worth the hike. Keep an eye out for dolphins in the deep waters off Kalamos’ northern shore.
Tip: Start your hike early in the morning to avoid the heat and catch the best light for photographs. The cooler temperatures and morning light make for a more comfortable trek.
- Ithaca
Step into the world of Homeric legend on Ithaca, reputedly the home of Odysseus. While you won’t encounter mythical creatures, you’ll find fascinating museums in Vathy that delve into local culture and folklore. Kioni, a traditional port town, is perfect for a leisurely lunch.
Tip: Visit the museums in Vathy later in the day to avoid the midday heat. Afterward, enjoy a long lunch in Kioni, where the tranquil setting complements the leisurely pace.
Northern Ionian: A Blend of Culture and Adventure
- Sivota Mourtos
From Corfu Town, sail to Sivota Mourtos on the Greek mainland. Drop anchor at Sand Bar Bay for water sports or unwind at Karavostasi Beach, nestled between rolling hills.
Tip: Check local weather reports before heading to Sand Bar Bay for water sports. The sheltered bay can be a great spot for activities, but conditions can change quickly.
- The Ruins of Nikopolis
For history enthusiasts, a short journey inland from Prevesa reveals the ancient ruins of Nikopolis. The archaeological site provides a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Greece.
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water for your visit to Nikopolis. The site covers a large area, and exploring it can be quite a workout.
- Paxos
Experience blue-water sailing as you head to Paxos, a small island with a rich history. Visit Harami Beach for banana boat rides and enjoy the picturesque Panagia Monastery. South of the island, Kipiani Beach is ideal for lunch with its white stone beach and clear waters.
Tip: Make a reservation at a local restaurant in Paxos ahead of time, especially during peak season. The island’s popularity can lead to long waits for dining without a booking.
- Antipaxos
Just south of Paxos, Antipaxos is a tiny island known for its stunning beaches and clear, turquoise waters. Voutoumi Beach, with its soft white sand and surrounding greenery, is a must-visit for those seeking a serene and beautiful spot to relax.
Tip: Arrive early at Voutoumi Beach to enjoy the tranquillity before the day-trippers arrive. The beach’s popularity peaks in the afternoon, so an early start ensures a more peaceful experience.
