What to do in Grenada

When you feel the need to “spice up” your vacation plans with some irresistible island flavor and thirst-quenching on-the-water action, it’s time to put Grenada on your radar! Affectionately known as the “Spice Isle of the Caribbean”, this Windward Island is worthy of your much-deserved vacation time and will awaken your senses in the most delightful of ways.

There is much to see and do in Grenada both onshore and off, but we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorites to help you plan your own island-hopping vacation in this sought-after destination.

Belmonte Estate

A unique attraction that you simply must visit in Grenada is the Belmonte Estate, one of the few fully-operational plantations remaining in the Caribbean. The 17th-century plantation offers tours of the organic cocoa and nutmeg production facilities. Plus, visitors can enjoy the on-site petting zoo, museum, cafe, and market at Belmonte Estate.

Concord Falls Grenada

Concord Falls

Grenada is home to several gorgeous waterfalls, including the three found at Concord Falls on the west side of the island. The first crisp clear waterfall is easy to access by way of a paved path but if you want to swim in the second and third natural cascading wonders, you must partake in some scenic hiking first.

Ft George Grenada

Fort George

When it comes to breath-taking panoramic views of Grenada, you can’t beat Fort Frederick located in St. George. From atop the lookout areas of this historic French fortress, you can marvel in stunning Caribbean scenery as far as the eye can see.

Grand Anse Beach

There is no shortage of postcard-worthy beaches in Grenada but Grand Anse is world-famous for its pristine beauty and sheltered location. Soft white sand spans across over three kilometers on this signature beach, where there are plenty of seaside bars and the snorkeling conditions are superb.

Levera National Park

450-acre Levera National Park is one of the most picturesque places in all of Grenada. The lovely lagoon is an important wildlife habitat, especially for a wide range of bird species. Levera’s beach is simply spectacular and the surrounding waters host a haven of protected reefs best experienced by snorkelers.

River Antoine Rum Distillery

The Caribbean is all about fun-in-the-sun and rum-in-the-sun, so no Grenada vacation is complete without a tasting tour of the Antoine Rum Distillery, which is the oldest functioning water-propelled distillery in the Caribbean. When you visit this legendary facility, you’re able to witness the entire traditional rum-making process and of course, sample some of the highly-potent cane sugar liquor.

Sandy Island Grenada

Sandy Island

For an authentic “deserted island” experience, head on over to Sandy Island, a picture-perfect stretch of palm-fringed sand and sea. There is a natural pool in the middle of the island where you can take a dip, unwind, and wash the salt off your skin. Sandy Island also has a protected marine area on the western coast with impeccable snorkeling and diving conditions.

St George Grenada

St. George

The colorful capital of Grenada, St. George is a can’t-miss vacation stop that is especially popular among boaters, who dock their yachts at the bustling harbor of Carenage. Both Fort Frederick and Fort George are located on St. George, where you can also wander through the Grenada National Museum, which is housed in a former French prison with barracks circa 1704. Soak up endless amounts of local Grenada culture whilst strolling St. George’s Market Square and chocolate lovers be on the lookout for the infamous House of Chocolate!

Tobago Cays

A Grenada yacht charter allows you to visit the prized collection of tiny islands known as the Tobago Cays, which are located just east of Salt Whistle Bay. Known for being a top-rated snorkeling and diving site, the Tobago Cays offer Caribbean beauty at its best. It’s a splendid place that you simply have to see to believe.

Underwater Sculpture Park Grenada

Underwater Sculpture Park

Just off the western coast of Grenada in Moliniere Bay, divers and snorkelers can marvel in the magnificent artwork that lives below sea level at the Underwater Sculpture Park. The life-size sculptures created by Jason deCaires Taylor are best experienced up-close but for those who are not comfortable with diving down to see the exhibit, glass-bottom boat tours are also available, which allow you to see the sculptures from afar.

The above-mentioned items are just some of the things that make Grenada a bucket-list-worthy destination. So, if you’re an intermediate sailor that loves slipping away to sun-soaked paradise with your best seafaring mates, “spice up” your vacation plans and head to the “Spice Isle of the Caribbean” for a wind-drawn adventure that you’ll not soon forget.
